If you need help right now

The National Gambling Helpline is free, confidential and open 24 hours a day, every day: 0808 8020 133. It is run by GamCare, and you can also reach it by live chat or WhatsApp. You do not need a diagnosis, a plan or a number in mind to call it.

Gambling is entertainment with a negative expected return. It is not income, and it is not a way to recover a loss. This page sets out the controls that work, the support routes available in Great Britain, and one thing that matters specifically for the operator this site reviews: most of the British safety net does not reach it.

The part people assume is automatic, and is not

Britain’s consumer protections for online gambling are attached to the operating licence, not to gambling itself. They are conditions the Gambling Commission places on the companies it licenses. An operator without that licence is not bound by any of them — and Mostbet holds no Great Britain licence, which we confirmed by downloading the Commission’s own register.

Protection With a GB-licensed operator Without one
GAMSTOP self-exclusion Mandatory since 31 March 2020 as a licence condition — registering blocks every licensed site at once Not covered. GAMSTOP excludes you from “all online gambling companies licensed in Great Britain”; an unlicensed site is outside the scheme by definition
Deposit limits and reality checks Required by the licence conditions, in a form the regulator specifies Whatever the operator chooses to offer, changeable by the operator
Complaints route Commission-approved alternative dispute resolution, free to the customer, no minimum claim The operator’s own terms. Mostbet’s set the floor for independent dispute resolution at EUR 1,000 — below that, its decision is the last word
Advertising and affordability rules Enforced, with licence suspension as the sanction Not applicable

This is not an argument for or against any operator. It is the reason the next section matters: if you want a block that holds, it has to be one that does not depend on the operator being licensed here.

Three controls that work regardless of who licenses the site

1. A bank gambling block

Most UK banks and app-based accounts let you switch off gambling transactions on your card, usually inside the banking app under card controls. It works at the payment rail rather than at the register, so it applies to any merchant coded as gambling — including offshore ones that no British scheme covers. It does not close your account and does not affect your credit score.

The detail that makes it useful is the cooling-off period: several banks will not lift the block on demand, and impose a delay of a day or more before it comes off. That delay is the whole point. Ask your bank what theirs is when you switch it on, because a block you can reverse in ten seconds at 2 a.m. is not a block.

Two limits to know. Blocks are applied per card and per account, so a second account or a card you have forgotten about is a gap. And a transaction that reaches the operator through a route not coded as gambling — some e-wallets, vouchers and crypto rails — can pass a card block that would otherwise stop it.

2. Device blocking software

This blocks gambling sites and apps on the devices themselves, so it does not care where the operator is licensed either.

  • BetBlocker — free, from a registered charity, covering Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android and Fire OS.
  • Gamban — normally a paid subscription, but free for people in Great Britain through TalkBanStop, which bundles it with GamCare adviser support and help registering with GAMSTOP.

Install it on every device you gamble from, not just the one you gamble from most. The phone in a drawer is the one that gets used.

3. GAMSTOP, for everything it does cover

GAMSTOP is free, takes a few minutes, and blocks you from every online operator licensed in Great Britain for a minimum of six months, one year or five years. You cannot remove it during the minimum period you choose — again, that is the feature, not a flaw.

It will not block an unlicensed offshore site. That is not a defect in GAMSTOP; it is the boundary of what a national scheme can enforce. Use it for the coverage it gives, and use the bank block and device blocking for what it cannot reach. The three together are what a real exclusion looks like.

Setting limits before you need them

Limits set in advance are decisions; limits set mid-session are negotiations. Practical version:

  • Decide a monthly amount you could lose entirely without changing anything about your life, and treat it as spent the moment it is deposited.
  • Set deposit and loss limits before the first payment, not after the first loss.
  • Set a time limit as well as a money limit, and use session reminders. Time lost is the harm people notice last.
  • Never gamble with borrowed money, money for bills, or an overdraft.
  • Never increase a stake to recover a loss. The loss is already sunk; the increased stake is a new one.
  • Do not gamble to change how you feel — to escape stress, boredom, grief or a bad day.

Warning signs

None of these on their own means anything is wrong. Several of them together is worth a phone call.

  • Depositing more than planned, more often than planned, or after telling yourself you had stopped.
  • Chasing losses — betting more to get back to level.
  • Hiding the amount, the time or the losses from people close to you.
  • Borrowing to gamble, or moving money between accounts to hide it.
  • Gambling to escape stress, low mood, loneliness or anxiety.
  • Trying to cut down or stop and finding you cannot.
  • Sleep, work, study or relationships slipping.
  • Anyone close to you saying they are worried about it.

What this site does not do

We do not accept bets, hold deposits, process payments or run an account system. We cannot see, freeze, close or recover anybody’s account with any operator, and we do not want copies of anybody’s identity documents — what our contact address can and cannot do says so explicitly.

We publish no recommendation to register or deposit anywhere, and we do not present gambling as a financial strategy. Every metric on this site describes an interface, a document or a dated check. None of them is a prediction of what will happen to your money.

Common questions

Does GAMSTOP block Mostbet?

No. GAMSTOP excludes you from online gambling companies licensed in Great Britain, and Mostbet does not hold that licence — we searched the Gambling Commission’s downloadable register on 29 August 2026 across all 2,653 business accounts, 2,436 trading names and 2,243 domains and found no record. Registering with GAMSTOP is still worth doing for everything it does cover; to reach an unlicensed site you need a bank gambling block and device blocking software as well.

Who can I complain to if something goes wrong with an unlicensed operator?

Not the Gambling Commission, which regulates its own licensees. Under Mostbet’s own terms the route is the operator’s complaints process first, with escalation to independent dispute resolution available only for claims of EUR 1,000 or more, within six months. Below that threshold the operator’s decision stands. The clauses are quoted on payments and withdrawals.

What is the fastest thing I can do today if I want to stop?

Two things, in about fifteen minutes: switch on the gambling block in your banking app, and install BetBlocker on every device. Both are free and neither depends on any operator agreeing to it. Then call 0808 8020 133 — the helpline is open at whatever hour you are reading this.

Can I get my money back from a site I should not have been able to use?

We cannot answer that for any individual case, and anyone promising a recovery for a fee is worth treating with suspicion. Free debt advice from StepChange, National Debtline or Citizens Advice is the right first call, and the National Gambling Helpline can point you at both support and the practical steps.

Is a bank block enough on its own?

Usually not. It stops card payments coded as gambling, which is a lot, but a second card, another account, or a funding route not coded as gambling can go around it. Bank block, device blocking and GAMSTOP together close far more of the gap than any one of them does alone.
